Everyone always wants to know everything they can do to be the most prepared for their pup’s portrait session, but really we just want their natural selves to shine! But, that being said, there are a few things you can do at home to make sure they’re looking and feeling their best.

Get them groomed

If your dog has a specific cut you like them to have (looking at you, doodle owners!), or their white fur is looking more like brown, the week before or the week of their session is the best time to book a grooming appointment for them. That way they’re looking their best and you’ve given their cut a few days to settle into it moving as naturally as possible.

I wouldn’t recommend getting them groomed the same day as their portrait session unless your dog is exceptionally chill at the groomer. That way we’re not piling a new activity on top of the stress of having to be groomed.

Exercise your dog first

Whether it’s physical or mental exercise or a combination of both, try to wear out your dog a bit before your photography session. Just try not to let them roll around in the dirt too!

I’ll always go at your dog’s pace during our session and make sure they’re feeling comfortable as we start taking photos, but exercising your dog means that they’ll be able to settle into their session a little quicker than if they’re bouncing around with unused energy.

Bring their favorite things

Plan to bring a few different favorite treats and a favorite toy or two to your session. If your treats have crinkly bags that I can shake, even better! I love shaking treat bags, squeaking toys, and of course have a variety of noises I make.

If you have something else that’s their favorite and can draw their attention, feel free to bring it! Even their favorite person helps - When I have two pet parents with me, I’ll often have one holding the dog’s leash and one behind me with their treats or toys to get that perfect eye contact with the camera.

And for a bonus tip: have fun! This is something I hear from every client - that their session was fun and relaxed. All the prep we do helps, but really we just want to make sure we capture your pet’s best selves, and the best way to do that is to chill out and let them be their normal, fun loving self.
